Long Beach Cancer League Fundraiser
Les Young joined Rotarians from Lakewood Rotary Club to volunteer at the fundraiser for the Todd Cancer Institute and the Jonathan Jaques Children Cancer Institute at MemorialCare. Les helped with the tribute wall while his wife helped organize the silent auction.
Club Social at Ten Mile
We had a great turnout at the last club social for the Rotary year 2023-24. Everyone was in high spirit and shared not only pizza and beer, but traded great stories from the past and future.
Here is to another great Rotary year under the leadership of Jose Quintanilla.
District 5320 Conference
Rotarians from all over Orange County and Los Angeles County convened at the Long Beach Marriott to celebrate the community projects that we do locally and globally. The Interactors (middle and high school version of the Rotary club) joined everyone for the conference.
We hosted a hospitality night with Lakewood Rotary on Friday, and our guest speakers included Sylvia Whitlock, the first woman Rotary club president in the world, and Alex Montoya, a successful writer and entrepreneur whose life was transformed by RYLA (Rotary’s youth leadership camp).
Our own Frank Dunnick was recognized as the unsung hero of our club for his consistent meeting attendance and enthusiastic participation in community service projects.
Surf City Rotary Derby Party
Huntington Beach Rotary hosted the 2nd annual Surf City Derby Party today while we watched the Kentucky Derby with live music, catered food, and in the company of friends and family.
Happy Birthday, Signal Hill!
The City of Signal Hill celebrated its centennial anniversary with a car show, ceremony, and a drone light show in the evening. Kiran represented our club at the city-wide event.
Marching for Mental Health
The inaugural Marching for Mental Health organized by Rotary District 5320 recruited more than 200 participants to raise awareness for mental health challenges in our community and mobilized funds for local non-profits that help promote mental well-being. The 3K walk took place at the Yorba Regional Park in Anaheim Hills on a beautiful, crispy Saturday morning.
The march is the brainchild of Governor Roy Jefferson, who helped Rotarians from the district to focus on mental health issues.
RYLA 2024
We wrapped up another fantastic Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) in Idylllwild last week. Over 200 high school students participated and returned as better version of themselves from the camp. They learned about their own personality and how to work with people who have a different work style, how to communicate non-verbally, and how to embrace failure as part of their personal journey.
Kiran, Frank, Rey, and Les all volunteered at the camp, and some of our children also helped train the campers as junior counselors.
Club Social with Nakul
It’s not hard to see why Nakul Rao was a finalist for the international district scholarship to study abroad. Graduating soon from West Point, Nakul already demonstrates charisma and leadership qualities far surpassing individuals who are far more advanced in their life experience and profession.
It’s obvious that he will chart an extraordinary path in his life and create a brighter future for all of us.
Food Bank of Southern California
Under the coordination of Food Bank of Southern California, Frank, Jose, and Les jointed volunteers from the community to pack produce and other food items for distribution to those who are at risk for food insecurity in our community at the Los Angeles Goodwill. It was a precious opportunity to connect with those whose fate has provided them with less blessing. It was a deeply meaningful experience for those who volunteered.
Donation to Long Beach Animal Care Services
As promised, we donated 70% of our Mutt Run proceeds to the Long Beach Animal Care Services, totaling $3,784.87. In addition, we brought a gift basket contributed by Pawlistic for the sheltered dogs too.
Les and Frank joined the staff at LBACS for a photo op. We are looking for more volunteer opportunities at the animal shelter.
