Newly Remodeled Starbucks
We met at the newly remodeled Starbucks on Willow St. and Long Beach Blvd. this morning. The new conference room allows plenty of natural light pouring into the open space and a large screen that obviates the need for a projector.
We heard from Janeen Carlberg, who is an employment attorney, regarding the intricacies of legal issues surrounding discrimination, harassment, and wrongful termination at the workplace.
Justice Scholars Program at LBCC
Sara Rodriguez and Rosa Martinez briefed us on the amazing work they are doing at the Justice Scholars Program at Long Beach City College to guide formerly incarcerated students navigating their path to academic success. They also shared how their personal journey is inspiring others to pursue a diverse career options that seemed daunting or unattainable before.
Rotarians Serve Meals for Seniors
Thanks to Jesse Rivera’s persistent effort, he coordinated with Meals on Wheels of Orange County to serve and entertain senior residents at the North Seal Beach Senior Center on November 27th. Raul Arechiga and Kiran Gidwani dedicated their time and passion to brighten the day for the residents.
Rotarians Visiting from Kaohsiung, Taiwan
We are honored to welcome Rotarians Eric Chang and Luke Hsiao from the Rotary Club in Kaohsiung, Taiwan to our club meeting this morning. They graciously hosted president Les when he visited their club in Kaohsiung in May of 2023.
We also learned more about Precious Life Shelter from Theresa Murphy, which offers transitional and permanent housing to mothers who are homeless during pregnancy.
Operation School Bell for Signal Hill Elementary
Collaborating with the Assistance League of Long Beach, Signal Hill Rotary provided the man and woman power to assemble backpacks full of school uniforms and supplies for the students at Signal Hill Elementary School. Assistance League generously donated the school supplies and uniforms.
President-elect Jose coordinated with Wendy from Assistance League to make this project possible. Of course, the most important thing is that these students now have the necessary tools to succeed in school.
Su Casa and Meals on Wheels
Alberto and Debbie from Su Casa, a local domestic violence shelter established in the 1970’s, told us about their mission and what they are doing to support women and children during the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Krista from the Orange County Meals on Wheels also shared their projects and how they’re helping seniors live independent lives.
Most importantly, we welcomed Raul, the newest member of our Rotary family. There is so much comraderies and opportunities to do good for our neighbors.
Les Visits Norwalk Santa Fe Springs Rotary
President of the Norwalk Santa Fe Springs Rotary Club, Carlos Gallardo, invited Les as guest speaker for their club meeting. This was an excellent opportunity for the two clubs to share fundraising ideas and to collaborate on projects.
Les also shared his Rotary journey with fellow Rotarians from this club.
K9 Kismet at the Mutt Run
Nici and Diana from K9 Kismet, a local dog rescue, joined us at the club social this evening to find out ways to collaborate at the next Mutt Run event on February 17, 2024.
We had a blast sharing dog stories and pizza at the Ten Mile Brewing Company.
Alvarado Elementary Uniform Fitting
Jose and Rey worked with the Assistance League of Long Beach to measure and fit uniforms for all the students at Alvarado Elementary School in Long Beach. Assistance League provides over 14,000 uniforms for students at Long Beach Unified School District. The Signal Hill Rotary Club has been collaborating with them to purchase school supplies and assemble backpacks for many local schools.
Long Beach Gives Starts 9/14
The Mutt Run is now a part of the Long Beach Gives fundraising campaign, which starts on September 14th.
